Bis 1960 hatte sich der Sound der schwarzen Popmusik von einem treibenden, überwiegend schnellen Rhythm and Blues zu einem emotional ergreifenderen Stil gewandelt, der damals als säkularisierter Gospel bezeichnet wurde. Der Begriff „Soul” tauchte hier und da auf, wurde aber erst nach der Veröffentlichung von Ray Charles' „I Believe To My Soul” Ende 1959 zum gängigen Sprachgebrauch.
